INTERVIEW BY KRISTLE HAYNES
Tell us a bit about how you began your artistic journey –
I was always drawing my whole life. I would design clothes from my bedroom when I was little, draw from fashion magazines and create my own catalogs. Art classes in High School lead to pursuing my dreams at The Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC. I went for Fashion Merchandising Management and took illustration and design classes at night.
I was always drawing for fun but I thought I was sketching to create clothes, not just sketching for the art. The ah-ha moment for me was after I created my first fashion company Rock Hard Atelier, a day to night dress line in 2009, I was doing it alone right out of college and didn’t have a team. I was kind of stuck and didn’t get the orders I needed to keep my line alive. I hit a creative block and just needed a mentor. I met Gabrielle Bernstein and she told me to just DO IT, to just draw something. I drew her as a thank you and she ended up using my art on the cover of her best selling mediation album. From then I began getting a following for my art. I focused on social media to get orders and started my second company Emily Brickel Consulting, which I still get custom orders for my etsy account to this day.
I still love custom orders and getting to do more detailed sketches as well. That company had brought me to live sketching on paper at events in the fashion industry. For that I needed to be fast, so I trained myself to do a 3-5 minute live sketch so that I could draw the most amount of people at a party and keep the line moving. My husband would come with me and saw the emotional response guests had to my sketches. We decided we needed to get this out to the masses and developed our app and company Chic Sketch together!
Now we just celebrated 3 years in business together and are launching an anniversary phone case in our merchandise line on ChicSketchShop.com! You can also check us out at ChicSketch.com, @chicsketch on Instagram, EmilyBrickelEdelson.com and @EmilyBrickel on Instagram!
